The Health Benefits of Spending Time Outdoors

There are far too many Americans who don’t spend enough time outdoors. Some people prefer to stay inside because they would rather play with their electronics and gadgets than enjoy Mother Nature, while others try their best to stay away from UV rays, bugs, and other things that they may encounter when they are outside. But there are so many benefits to spending time outdoors, and people should really make more of an effort to do it. Take a look at some of the benefits below.

Increased vitamin D

There is such a thing as getting too much sunlight. You can put your skin at risk if you spend extended periods of time outside. But that shouldn’t stop you from getting outside altogether, because exposure to some sunlight can help raise your body’s vitamin D levels. According to Harvard Health Publications, studies have shown that vitamin D can protect you from osteoporosis, cancer, stroke, and more, and all you need is about 10 to 15 minutes of sunlight to enjoy this particular benefit.

Increased exercise

Simply going outside won’t necessarily result in you exercising. But it will greatly improve your chances of putting your body to work. Even if you just take a walk or play with your kids for a few minutes, you will likely end up exercising when you spend time outdoors. Kids in particular could benefit from spending more time outside since they will often naturally resort to running around and playing when they are pushed to be outdoors.

Increased concentration

Did you know that you will have less trouble concentrating after spending time outdoors? Harvard Health Publications reports that studies have shown that kids and adults are able to focus better after they have been outside for even a short period of time. Think about that the next time you’re having trouble coming up with a great idea or focusing on even the simplest of tasks.

Increased happiness

Sunlight has been shown to elevate mood. Physical activity and fresh air can do the same. So by going outside for a walk or going out on a boat to do some fishing, you can usually turn a frown upside down and experience more happiness in your life.
